Frequently Asked Questions on LFX Coatings

Lustre FX metal coatings are fast becoming the “go to” product for many architects, designers and fabricators in the commercial world. The many benefits of the versitile finishes compliment leading edge designs and outweigh use of traditional materials such as sheet metal and other surface finishes. The residential market recruits Lustre FX as a beautiful finish to enhance modern renovations and home improvements, such as front doors and gates to create a stunning entrance.

Are Lustre FX coatings metal paint?

  • No our coatings are mixtures comprising of 75% pure cintered metal.  They are a cold sprayable process in which the substrate is prepared, sprayed, cured, polished and finished.  Lustre FX finishes are a more durable and lustrous finish than metallic paint.  Our coatings can be used instead of chrome-plating, foundry metal, plating or vacuum, processes.

Are Lustre FX coatings like powder coating?

  • No, our process is not baked on.  It is sprayed, hand applied, trowelled, tooled and poured on and does not involve heat in the spray process.  As a result there is no distortion to the substrate.

Are Lustre FX coatings metal plating?

  • No, Lustre FX Coatings is a cold spray metallization process.  Metal plating on the other hand is an electro-chemical process. The cold spray technique allows a large variety of surfaces to be coated.

What are the lifespan of Lustre FX coatings?  Can they used outdoors?

  • The lifespan of the Lustre FX coatings when applied properly to the correct substrate and used in an outdoor scenario is up to 25yrs.  When used in an interior application the lifespan of the product is infinite with the correct care (which is minimal)

What substrates does Lustre FX not adhere to?

  • Anything which is silicone, teflon based or unsealed styrofoam.  Any substrate which has wax or oil already applied.  The reason for this is that the product can’t adhere and crosslink with the surface.

Do Lustre FX use protective top coats?

  • Yes all finishes are protected with a topcoat of some sort. We use a low sheen finish to let the natural properties of the metal come through, archival wax or our proprietary Nano polish as the final stage in the finishing process.

How many coats are required?

  • In most cases we recommend surfaces should be coated twice.  This ensures a strong bond and maximizes the visual effect.

Do Lustre FX Coatings shrink?

  • No.  Lustre FX coatings are not paint so there is no shrinkage from evaporation.

Are Lustre FX Coatings flexible?

  • Flex FX is our exclusively developed product for the film industry and can be applied to flexible surfaces, even cloth.

Are Lustre FX Coatings Electrically Conductive?

  • No.  Lustre FX coatings do not conduct electricity and are non-galvanic (except for iron).
